Two things, from two different rules that often get confused. California required auto-reverse and an external entrapment protection device under AB 3600 IN 1990, and the FEDERAL requirement covers openers MANUFACTURED AFTER 1 JANUARY 1993, built to the UL 325 standard. That is what the photo-eye sensors near the floor are. Separately and much later, SB 969 added battery backup from 1 July 2019. An opener with non-working photo-eyes is not safe to keep in service whatever its age.

Often, and we would rather you tried. Both sensors sit near the floor facing each other. Wipe both lenses, check that nothing is blocking the beam, and look at the indicator lights: most units show a steady light on both when aligned and a flickering or dark one when not. Gently adjust the bracket until both are steady. If that fixes it, you have saved a call-out and we are happy about that.

Knocks, mostly. A bike, a bin or a car bumper catching the bracket is the usual cause, and the bracket only has to move a fraction. Vibration over time contributes, and on a west-facing Orange County garage we also see late-afternoon sun glare defeating the receiver, which looks like a fault but is optical. Loose or damaged wiring from rodents or age is the other common one.

Photo-eye sensors are required entrapment protection under federal rules for openers manufactured after 1 January 1993 and under California's AB 3600 from 1990, and they exist because children and pets get under closing doors. If a technician offers to bypass them so the door will close, that is a serious warning about who you have hired.

Then it is usually the close-force setting or the travel limits, or the door itself is binding on something. An opener senses resistance and reverses, which is the safety system doing its job. If the door drags on a bent track or a worn roller, the opener is reacting correctly to a real problem. We check the door and the tracks rather than simply turning the force up, which is how people defeat a safety system without realising.

Commercial operators have their own entrapment protection requirements and the arrangement differs by door type and operating mode. On a fire door assembly, NFPA 80 also requires inspection and testing ANNUALLY BY QUALIFIED PERSONS, which is a separate obligation from anything to do with the opener.
